Carlo Ferrini was born in Florence in 1954. He is the advisor responsible for viniculture for some of the most renowned wine-growing estates in Tuscany.
He took his exam at the agricultural faculty of Florence University in 1978, then began his cooperation with the Consorzio del Chianti Classico whose technical department he headed from 1986.
During this time he acquired profound knowledge in viniculture and in winemaking of the Chianti area, based on his lab experience and practical work with member companies. His great ambition is and always was the revaluation of Sangiovese.
He was appointed technical head of the "Chianti Classico 2000" research project which gave him specific knowledge of the selection of Sangiovese clones. Today he is regarded as one of the best and most qualified experts in this area.In 1991 he received the title of "Accademico della Vite e del Vino", in the following year he was made a winemaker.
In 1992 he started his own business with an assignment from Castello di Fonterutoli and Brancaia. Both estates profited from his experience, the way he evaluated the characteristics of every vineyard and actually changed the personality of their wines.
The Wine Guide "Gambero Rosso" awarded "his" wines many prizes, so declaring him "Winemaker of the year 2000" seemed only logical. In 2003 it was AIS (Associazione Italiana Sommelier)’s turn to declare him “Winemaker of the Year” and in 2008 the American magazine Wine Enthusiast proclaimed him "Winemaker of the Year". |
