Harvest 2019 wine year

After a rather mild winter with little snow that did not stick we had a rainy spring with temperatures below average. Therefore, blossoming and the subsequent phenological phases of the vines were later than in the last years.

The rainfalls stopped end of May and we went from cold and wet to high summer conditions. The next two months we had one beautiful day after the other with temperatures up to 40°C. Thanks to the generous spring rains there was no unwanted stress for the vines. Just in time before it got too dry we had a stormy and rainy night end of July. This assured a perfect maturation with the right amount of stress during a beautiful and warm August. End of August and September were characterized by some insignificant rains and temperatures of around 30°C during the day with substantially cooler nights. This ideal climatic condition that lasted throughout the vegetative cycle made it possible to harvest the individual varieties at their optimum technological and phenolic ripeness.

The harvest began in the Maremma on the 23rd of August with the Merlot for the Rosé and was followed by the Viognier for the Bianco. Beginning of September, we picked the remaining Merlot grapes, followed by the Sangiovese, the Cabernet Sauvignon, the Cabernet Franc and then the Petit Verdot. In the Maremma we completed our harvest mid-October.

In the Chianti we started a bit later than in the previous years. The Sauvignon Blanc was pick on the 11th of September followed by the Merlot. The Sangiovese was harvested from mid-September until the beginning of October. We completed our picking in the Chianti Classico region in the first week of October with the Cabernet Sauvginon.

We are very happy with the quality as well as with the quantity. The weather conditions allowed us to handpick all grapes healthy and perfectly mature. Just some insights from the cellar:

The Rosé is very fragrant and with sustained acidity, light in color and alcohol just as it should be.

Our white wine has a great structure, beautiful flavors and lively acidity. The Viognier is the best.

Our red wines are very rich in polyphenols and extract, the right amount of alcohol, optimal acidity and ph. In summary they have all the ingredients required to create a well balanced and elegant wine with great potential for aging.

Il Blu 2015 is a "Hot Wine" for Wine Spectator

“Hot wines” for Wine Spectator are the most exciting discoveries from their editors’ most recent tastings and are published in Wine Spectator Insider, their weekly member newsletter: “They are high-scoring wines from around the world that may be difficult to find, but are worth seeking out.”, recites the description of this exclusive section.  And Il Blu 2015, with 95/100 points, was listed as a “Hot Wine” in the Dec. 19, 2018 Wine Spectator Insider Issue.
Here is how Bruce Sanderson, Tuscany Editor, defines the wine: “This red is sleek and focused, with blackberry, black currant and tobacco aromas and flavors that cut like a laser through the linear frame. Delivers fine harmony and a long finish.”

Brilliant ratings for Ilatraia 2015

After the excellent score of 96/100 by James Suckling, last October, Ilatraia 2015 got a beautiful 95/100 score and extremely flattering tasting notes from Monica Larner on “The 2015 Ilatraia is a drop-dead gorgeous blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Petit Verdot and 20% Cabernet Franc with all fruit coming from Brancaia's Maremma vineyards along the Tuscan coast. This warm vintage has shaped an exuberant and intense red wine that hits the palate with lavish richness. The complex bouquet is composed of dark fruit elements that are contrasted seamlessly against spice, sweet tobacco and campfire ash. Yet the mouthfeel is never too heavy or overextracted. There's a lot to enjoy here.”
Not less exciting the score (93/100) and the notes by Bruce Sanderson in the Dec. 19, 2018 Wine Spectator Insider issue: “A beast, featuring plum, black currant, leather and earth flavors locked in a tight grip of tannins. A bit closed now, yet remains balanced and long on the iron-tinged finish.”

Wine Advocate: 97/100 for Ilatraia 2013, what a great result!

A brilliant start for the new year! 2017 has already brought our wines beautiful ratings and flattering tasting notes. On Monica Larner has evaluated the new vintages of our production. In addition to great ratings, she has also touched us with her words.

"This is perhaps the finest set of wines produced by Barbara Widmer and the excellent team at Brancaia".
"The 2013 Ilatraia is among my top three favourite wines tasted during this September session."
"If I had to make a 2013 Chianti Classico short list, this wine would be on it." (Chianti Classico Riserva 2013)
"Entry level wines don't get better than this." (TRE 2014)

We are not only flattered and honored, but we also confirm our commitment to work with equal passion and enthusiasm in 2017!

The 2017 Tre Bicchieri® award to Brancaia Chianti Classico Riserva 2013

We are very proud to inform you that Brancaia Chianti Classico Riserva 2013 has been awarded the Tre Bicchieri® in the 2017 Edition of the Gambero Rosso Vini d'Italia guidebook
Is it just a coincidence that in the 2017 Edition Brancaia receives its 17th Tre Bicchieri award? In numerology, they say that a recurring number is like a cosmic signal. In winemaking, we don’t know what it means but we are in (1)7th heaven!

2014 Brancaia TRE with 92/100 by James Suckling

With a really perfect timing, the release of the 2014 vintage year of Brancaia TRE coincides with a first excellent rating: 92 points from James Suckling with really nice tasting notes:  “Crushed berries with cappuccino and hints of underbrush. This is really delicious with showy red fruit-oriented flavors, really juicy. Drink now.

Double success for Brancaia at Decanter World Wine Awards 2016 with two Gold medals.

We are very proud to announce that Brancaia was awarded two Gold medals with Brancaia IL BLU 2011 and Brancaia ILATRAIA 2012 at the latest Decanter World Wine Awards.

The Decanter World Wine Awards is one of the largest and most prestigious wine competitions in the world. Last year, nearly 16,000 wines were tasted at the beginning of the judging process by a panel of top wine experts and 305 were awarded a Gold medal. The exact figures of this year are not yet known.

We are really delighted with this result, which reflects the passion and dedication of our team and the quality of our vineyards, as well as the great popularity which these two wines enjoy among many wine lovers.

ILATRAIA 2012 #52 WS Top 100 in 2015... and for the 3rd time since 2005

Each year, Wine Spectator editors survey the wines reviewed over the previous 12 months and select the Top 100, based on quality, value, availability and excitement. We are very proud to announce that this year 2012 Ilatraia has been named #52 on Wine Spectator Top 100 List and for the 3rd time since 2005: #86 in 2012 and, last but not least, #29 in 2005.

94 points to 2012 Ilatraia

A very nice rating on Wine Spectator: Dense and tightly wound, with a beam of black cherry and blueberry fruit. Cedar, smoke, tar and tobacco notes add nuance, giving this a complex impression overall. Balanced and long, with a compact finish that should expand as this integrates more fully. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2018 through 2032. Bruce Sanderson

Antonio Galloni in rates 2011 Brancaia Il Blu with 93 points

“A deep, imposing wine, the 2011 Il Blu reflects the generous, ripe personality of the year. Mocha, black cherries, smoke, menthol and new leather are some of the signatures. The 2011 can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring, although I would prefer to give it a few years in bottle to develop further aromatic complexity. Raspberry jam, wild flowers and rose petal meld into the highly expressive finish. Il Blu, a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, has long been a personal favorite. This is a strong showing for the year”.
